Produce Storage 101

Are You Storing Your Produce Correctly?

Shopping for produce is easy and fun, especially if you’re at a farmers market with a wide variety to choose from - but making sure to eat all those veggies before they go bad is the hard part!

If you’re trying to expand your palate or experimenting with new fruits and vegetables, it can be hard to know whether to store these foreign goods in the fridge or on the counter, and improper storage can lead to poor taste or texture.

I’m facilitating Produce Storage 101 so that you can learn helpful tips and get answers to questions like, ‘How do I store fresh herbs?’ ‘Do tomatoes go in the fridge?’ and ‘Why are my potatoes sprouting?’ Join me on Tuesday, April 26th at 7:00 pm MDT.

Here’s The Plan

Before we go any further, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself - my name is Allissa Gaul, and my goal as a health coach is to help you find easy methods to make healthy choices in your day to day life. I’m a firm believer that if we have access to fresh produce at hand in our homes, we’re more likely to make better choices when it comes to feeding ourselves. It’s my hope that with a few tips and a little confidence, you’ll start getting more comfortable with handling healthy produce that makes your body feel better.

During this webinar, we’re going to explore topics like ethylene (the hormone that causes fruit to ripen), humidity levels in the refrigerator, and whether or not basil should be stored on the counter. Additionally, we’ll be discussing which foods could be taking up unnecessary space in the fridge, which should be stored in the pantry, and what kinds of produce don’t get along with one another. Together, we’ll also brush up on washing techniques, and the role that water and moisture play in common fruits and veggies that you keep in your house.

Cut Back On Food Waste!

About 150,000 tons of food are thrown away each day by American households, with fruits and vegetables topping the list as most likely to be thrown out. If you’ve bought more than you can eat - which we’re all guilty of from time to time - it’s crucial that you know how to store those foods correctly so that they don’t go bad before you get a chance to enjoy them and get your money’s worth!

Speaking of money, educating yourself about proper food storage will also help you save money. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation of the USDA, the average family of four throws out approximately $1,484 worth of food and beverages each year - yikes!

The more you know about your food, the better you’ll be able to care for it. Produce are like any other plants, they require specific instructions for care, and after joining me for Produce Storage 101, you’ll have a better idea of how to follow those instructions.
